It was another massive turnout for the annual Macedon Ranges Car Club’s, Picnic at Handing Rock car show. Over 2500 cars were on display, with an estimated crowd size of 10,000 people. It’s a big show and we got some sore legs after walking around the 6 odd acres of cars.
Hanging Rock is one of those few events that gets a great mix of cars. Sure the vast majority of them are of the locally build kind and American Muscle. But that’s never stopped anyone from bring vehicles of a different persuasion.
The age of the displayed cars spanned the last 100 years of motoring. From early motoring like Ford’s Model-T to the the more modern Ferrari 360. Even though the show is reserved for vehicles over 25 years old, the show organisers do allow the occasional exception. This creates a diverse range of car, bikes, trucks, tractors and stationary engines, that few shows have. We always like to see a good mix of different vehicles and interesting machines. It’s keeps a show from feeling stale and repetitive.
Since it’s inception, Hanging Rock has been focused around a family day out and the organisers try hard to keep it that way. It’s usually dad who drags everyone down to the show, but you see whole families enjoying themselves and making a day of it. Overall the show has a relaxed nature that comes from the easy going attitude from the event organisers. You feel like you’re going down to see bunch of mates to have a BBQ and beers.
It’s not just families enjoying the day out, some locals paid a visit to see what all the fuss was about. Yup that’s right Skippy came down to pay a visit. “What’s that skip? Do a skid?” And if you are wondering, she is a wild Kangaroo. A very friendly one, that would take food from your hand.
Later in the day the crowds gather to watch and photograph the leaving cars. It’s a Hanging Rock tradition, that has a lot to do with the size of the event and the high temperatures that come in late summer. The owners always put on a show for the crowd. A big cheer is given out when they drop some big black lines down the road.
Hanging Rock is always a big day and this year was no different. In the 5 hours we spent at the show, we still didn’t manage to see everything. That’s not a problem though, because their is always next year’s event to go to. It is one of the must go to events of the year. Hopefully next year’s weather will be a little warmer like it usually is at the Hang Rock show.
