The Nissan Datsun Sports Owners Club with the help of Classic Skylines Australia held a small Show and Shine on the New Quay Promenade, at Docklands. De Croft took a stroll down there, to see what was going on.
There were some 60 cars were on display and they varied from old Datsuns, to freshly restored Nissans and the more recent Nissan performance cars like the GT-R. As the day went on, a steady stream of curious on lookers wandered past the cars. Some wanted to get up close, while others wanted to take some pictures.
The Datsun club was out in force and they brought their Z Cars. These classics helped change Nissan’s image around the world and helped it create a reputation for building great sports cars. This reputation continues today with the latest generation of the GT-R.
Some old Nissan race cars came out to play too, like the Group C R31 Coupe touring car campaigned in the 80s. Nissan never delivered the R31 Coupe to Australia when new, but that didn’t stop Gibson Motor Sport from building such a race car. These R31s would set the foundation for the all conquering R32 GT-R Godzilla and the end of Group A racing in Australia.
The new R35 GT-R was on display too, which is now no longer considered part of the Skyline family. This was part of Nissan / Renault plan to the move the new R35 towards super car territory and away from a family sedan. GT-R’s recipe has never been set in stone, but it is sad to see an end to the Skyline GT-R. Only time will tell if the new R35 GT-R becomes as legendary as the preceding R32, R33 & R34 Skylines.
The locals weren’t the only ones admiring the displayed cars, a visiting group of Japanese tourists got understandably excited when seeing all the old Nissans and Datsuns. They couldn’t believe that the old cars still existed as most of them haven’t been seen on Japanese roads for years. It was a real delight for the owners.
The old classics were mixed in with the modern classics. The later R32 & R33 Skylines were on display too, all fitted up with go fast bits and displayed their GT-R badges proudly. Although technically they weren’t a Classic Skyline, Nissan or Datsun, they were a welcome addition.
Our short stroll became a long afternoon spent with boys from The Nissan Datsun Sports Owners Club and Classic Skylines Australia. It was a real delight to see lots of different cars, from the last 50 years Nissan has been bringing them to Australia and it’s good to know they all won’t become tin cans. De Croft is looking forward to the next Nissan and Datsun meet up.
