Melbourne put on a 35˚C scorcher for the first Dub-Stitute show. Held at Como Park, just off the fore-shore of the Yarra River. Despite the heat, there was a big turnout of over 100 cars on the day. Not bad for only a month’s notice. Stu and the other organisers Josh, Ryan, Woody and Jarred from the VW Watercooled forum put on a great show. De Croft went down to scope out all the rides.
The big turnout was a surprise, considering the short notice and the heat. The smart ones in the crowd were looking to keep out of the mid-day sun and look for a shady spot to rest. We decided to brave the heat and take some pics, at the worst time of day.
Plenty of modified VWs, Skodas, Seats, Audis were on display. As well as some restored cars and daily drivers.
It wasn’t just for the local guys either, they came from far and wide just to attend the show. Interstate number plates were a common sight, showing the dedication from some of the VW guys.
Tasty wheels were the order of the day, from the classics like BBS RX to the more modern BBS LM and Porsche Twist. The guys from the VW scene sure know what good wheels are. If only more people knew this, we wouldn’t have so many commodores on salad cutters.
It wasn’t just water-cooled Volkswagens that turned up either, a few very stylish, old school, air-cooled Vee Dubs came down too.
Their classic styling made for a good change from all the modern cars that were on display. It’s been a few years since we have seen a Type 3 on the road, it’s not a common site anymore. We’re glad someone is looking after them.
Written-off your ride? Smashed 3 out your 4 wheels? How about turning that last wheel into a stylish coffee table? We’ll remember that for next time.
What’s that lowered skateboard doing? It’s the Dub Stitute 2012 Best Stance Trophy, for all those who like it low. One of the best ideas for a trophy we have ever scene.
Time for the award winners. Look at that enthusiastic crowd, hiding in the shade.
MC Josh does his best to get the crowd going, with no success. The heat of the day, took its toll. We’re sure there was plenty of lobsters the day after.
The People’s Choice Winner Anthony for his Mk5 R32 TT.
The People’s Choice – Runner Up, Troy for his Polo GTi
Winner of the Best Stance, Josh and the slammed skateboard trophy. And of course his ride…
The slammed brown Mk1 Golf that Josh took out the Best Stance Award with. This thing is riding low Zender Turbo rims. Great car, great effort.
The Padded Cell Award Winner George, for the craziest, most outlandish and outrageous modifications. And his ride…
George’s Mk1 Golf is a crazy rig, that’s been slammed. Mods include miss matching front quarter panel, adorned with DIY artwork. This is then topped of with some roof racks + a bike and some stretchies on phat rims. Which barely fit under those guards.
The Best Presented Award Winner Matt, for the cleanest/most effort displayed. It takes into account: paint, interior, good detailing and engine bay. The prize for all the hard work is a big can of elbow grease.
Matt used plenty of that elbow grease getting the trio of Polo GTis vinyl wrapped just for the Dub Stitute show. No wonder he got the award.
The Car of Show Winner Troy (again), with his award in the form of some Volkswagen necklace bling. And his ride…
Troy’s immaculate Car of Show Polo GTi, which was was a runner up in the People’s Choice Award.
Being the first ever Dub Stitute we weren’t expected much. The turn out far exceeded our expectations. It’s a real tribute to what a great bunch of guys Stu, Josh, Ryan, Woody and Jarred are. A big thanks needs to go out to the Volkswagen Club of Victoria who provided the insurance. Without them the show wouldn’t have been possible. De Croft is looking forward to next year’s show, we can’t wait to see what the Vee Dub guys are going to do next.
